The new track was in use from 1954, the Dundee Courier of 5th September 1954 reported on the club championship meeting of the local clubs Dundee Road, Thistle, Strathmore and Forfarshire.
The first open meeting was on June 5th 1955 and included top riders competing in the 1,000 yds Scottish Championship, eight-lap double harness pursuit race and a devil-tak'-the-hindmost.
In 1954 Dundee Council introduced an experimental charge of six pence for cyclists, runners and spectators at the new track to see "if that brought in the £700-£800 required to run the tracks".
On May 4th 1955 Eileen Sheridan visited Caird Park and met the Heatherbell Ladies CC. Sheridan was a Hercules professional cyclist and in 1955 she held all 21 women's road records. There was a Grand Sports meeting at the track on June 18th 1955 which included the Scottish 1000 yds hard track cycle championship. A further meeting in August that year included the Scottish 4,000m pursuit championship.
The Caird Park track league was popular in the 1980's and 90's, the Dundee Thistle club website comments that the track league in 1993 was vey popular with over 50 riders taking part in the 10 event series.
In 2004, the 50th Anniversary Track Meeting was held which included the Scottish 15k scratch championship which was won by Chris Hoy, the first of his many cycling championships.
Caird Park was the home track of Mark Stewart, who won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Since 2005, Discovery Juniors Cycling Club have organised and run events at the velodrome.
In 2009, thedrumup.co.uk social media website commented "The track is now 25+ years old and is slowly falling into disrepair owing to lack of investment & funding from Dundee council. The surface has become lumpy and cracked and, in places, is rapidly approaching the point of being dangerous."
In 2012, the velodrome was upgraded with a new surface, a surrounding fence and floodlighting at a cost of £320,000, Sport Scotland contributed £121,000 of this.
The velodrome runs the mid-week Caird Park track league and has hosted Scottish track championships. The Caird Park complex has an athletics stadium, golf courses and football and rugby pitches.
